H.A.L.A. has rolled out a new Peer Mediation Program. The students who are participating in the program meet once a week on Fridays from 3:15pm to 5:00pm. They are currently being trained on becoming Peer Mediators and must complete the course by the end of the school year. The training is being led by The Leadership Program. Contact Ms. Nolasco for more information.
HALA has also formed a partnership this year with international law firm Allen & Overy. Through their community arts initiative called Artbeat, students are given the opportunity to create original artworks that will be on display at the firm’s Manhattan office. A representative from Allen & Overy will be coming to our school to meet and speak to our students. In addition, the firm is providing a full-time paid summer internship for one student at their Manhattan office, a rare opportunity for our 9th grade art students.
Information on the celebration of student work on display at Allen & Overy’s Manhattan office as well as how to apply for the summer internship will follow.
JAMAICA CAMPUS LIBRARY RENOVATION
In order to update the look and feel of the building’s library, Jamaica Campus will be renovating this summer. Walls will be taken down, new walls installed, updated technology will be installed. It should be a great upgrade for all of the schools in the building, including our own, Hillside Arts and Letters Academy. Stay tuned for more information on the project as well as updates and possibly pictures!

Hillside Arts & Letters Academy began a partnership with local non-profit arts organization Jamaica Center for Arts & Learning in its first year as a school in 2011. Shortly after this partnership was formed, JCAL offered HALA a 3 year grant from the Matisse Foundation. This grant would enable professional teaching artists to work with our students to create dynamic interdisciplinary projects in content area classes. The partnership has many goals including raising achievement in critical thinking and problem solving, two 21st Century Skills. Two teaching artists, one traditional drawer/painter and one cartoonist, have come to HALA this year to teach their practice and to help students make connections between art, English, social studies and science.
